         10月3日,瑞典卡罗林斯卡医学院宣布,把2005年诺贝尔生理学或医学奖授予澳大利亚科学家Barry J. Marshall和J. Robin Warren,以表彰他们发现了导致胃炎和胃溃疡的细菌-幽门螺杆菌。诺贝尔奖委员会在授奖词中说,由于Barry J. Marshall和J. Robin Warren的发现,使得原本慢性的、经常无药可救的胃溃疡变成了只需抗生素和一些其他药物短期就可治愈的疾病。
         在Marshall和Warren发现这种细菌之前,医学界认为正常胃里细菌是不能存活的。1979年根据活组织切片检查结果,Warren发现50%左右的病人的胃腔下半部分附生着许多微小的、弯曲状的细菌。Warren的发现引来了同行的质疑,但也引起了Marshall的极大兴趣,他们决定联合对取自100个病人的活组织切片进行研究。经过反复试验,Marshall成功地培育出一种当时尚不为人知晓的细菌-后来被命名为幽门螺杆菌。基于试验结果,Marshall和Warren认为,幽门螺杆菌是导致胃炎、十二指肠溃疡或胃溃疡的关键因素。发现这种细菌,使胃炎、十二指肠溃疡或胃溃疡的诊断治疗变得及其简单。目前科学家正在研究幽门螺杆菌与胃癌和一些淋巴肿瘤发病之间的联系。
